A word about our chickens

It’s nice to know exactly where one’s food comes from. In the case of our Free Range Chicken Stock, we’ve been able to exclusively source our chickens from one of Australia’s free range pioneers, Glenloth Free Range, located east of Wycheproof in the Victorian Mallee.

Ian and Ronda Milburn founded Glenloth in the early 90s. Since then, they’ve built an amazing company, with animal welfare and care at the forefront of everything they do. Glenloth is a true free range operation, handling all processing of their birds on the Glenloth property, which means that they are not stressed or hurt during transportation to an off-site abattoir (stress and injury during transportation is a major issue with chickens, whether they have been reared free range or not).

However, Glenloth have recently gone through some tough times. As their farm is close to the Avoca river, they were heavily affected during Victoria’s January floods and incurred significant stock losses. This was incredibly sad both for the animals and Glenloth’s workers as nature’s unpredictability hit them very hard. Since February, Glenloth has been slowly rebuilding their operation and we’re very happy that, in a small way, The Stock Merchant has been able to help Ian and Ronda out by arranging our exclusive supply agreement.

If you’d like to support a local producer who is doing the right thing, please look-out for Glenloth Free Range chickens and game birds in your local butcher. If they’re not available, ask your butcher to stock them. The quality and taste is just outstanding, and there’s nothing better than supporting a family run and owned local producer. Our hats are off to Ian, Ronda and the Glenloth team for their persistence and determination in the face of adversity.
