Are oysters healthy?

Yes. Oysters are one of the most nutrient-dense foods you can eat. Gram for gram they are the richest natural food source of zinc, exceptionally high in vitamin B12, and a good source of iron, selenium, copper and long-chain omega-3 fatty acids. 

Which sounds like the sort of thing every food brand says about its own product. So here are the numbers, and you can decide.

What nutrients are in oysters?

They are the multi-v of the sea!
Oysters deliver an unusual amount of nutrition for their size. Per 100g of Pacific oysters:

What's remarkable isn't any single line of that table. It's all of them at once. Very few foods deliver this many essential micronutrients in one place, and fewer still from a serve this small. The oyster has been quietly outperforming foods with far better marketing for a very long time.

Pantry Note

Oysters are filter feeders, which is why they're so mineral-rich. They spend their lives drawing seawater through their bodies and concentrating what's in it. The nutrition isn't added – it's accumulated.

Are oysters high in zinc?

Oysters are the richest natural source of zinc of any food. Published data for Pacific oysters puts zinc at approximately 16.6mg per 100g – more than any other whole food, and in a form the body absorbs readily.

For context, the Australian RDI for adults is 14mg/day for men and 8mg/day for women.

Beef, usually offered up as the good zinc source, isn't close. Pumpkin seeds – the internet's favourite answer to this question – are further behind again, and their zinc comes bound to phytates, which limits how much of it you actually absorb.

Zinc is involved in:

  • Immune function
  • Wound healing and skin repair
  • Normal growth and development
  • Protein synthesis
  • Taste and smell (zinc deficiency is a recognised cause of reduced taste)


Are oysters a good source of vitamin B12?

Yes – oysters are one of the densest food sources of vitamin B12 available. Published figures for Pacific oysters sit at around 16µg per 100g, against an Australian adult RDI of 2.4µg/day.

B12 supports red blood cell formation and normal nervous system function. It occurs almost exclusively in animal foods, which makes it one of the nutrients most likely to run low if you've reduced your red meat intake without replacing it with something equivalent.

Are tinned oysters as healthy as fresh oysters?

Yes. Tinned oysters retain the mineral content of fresh oysters. Minerals like zinc, iron, selenium and copper are heat-stable – they don't degrade during cooking or canning the way some vitamins do.

The practical differences come down to what else is in the tin:

  • The packing medium matters. Oysters packed in premium olive oil bring the benefits of the oil itself. Oysters packed in industrial seed oils bring a large dose of omega-6 alongside the omega-3 you were after.
  • Check the sodium. Some tinned oysters are heavily salted. Compare nutrition panels.
  • Read the ingredients list. A good tin needs two lines: oysters and oil. If it runs to a paragraph, something has gone wrong somewhere.

Pantry Note

Don't drain the oil away. If your oysters are packed in a premium olive oil, that oil has been sitting with smoked oysters for months and tastes like it. Pour it over the toast, not down the sink.


Are smoked oysters healthy?

Yes. Smoking is a preservation method, not a processing shortcut, and it doesn't meaningfully reduce the nutritional value of oysters. Traditionally smoked oysters, cooked over real wood rather than treated with liquid smoke flavouring, retain their mineral and omega-3 content.

As with any tinned product, the quality sits in the sourcing and the ingredients list rather than in the smoking. Smoke should be a method, not a marketing term.

Are oysters high in omega-3?

Oysters contain long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, at roughly 690mg per 100g. These are the forms of omega-3 the body can use directly, unlike ALA from plant sources such as flax and chia, which converts to EPA and DHA at a low and unreliable rate.

EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart and brain function. Most Australians fall short of recommended intakes, and oysters are one of the more efficient ways to close that gap.

Are oysters high in mercury?

No. Oysters are among the lowest-mercury seafoods available. Mercury accumulates up the food chain, so long-lived predatory fish: shark, swordfish, marlin, some tuna - carry the highest levels.

Oysters sit at the very bottom of that chain. Filter feeders, short lives, almost nothing accumulated. One of the few situations where being small and unambitious turns out to be an advantage. Food Standards Australia New Zealand places oysters in the lowest-mercury category, meaning there's no advisory limit on how often you can eat them.

How often can you eat oysters?

There's no established upper limit for oysters as part of a varied diet, and their low mercury content means they're not subject to the frequency advisories that apply to larger fish.

The one nutrient worth being aware of is zinc. The Australian upper level of intake for zinc is 40mg/day for adults – a level you'd have to work at to reach through food alone, but worth knowing if you also take a zinc supplement.

Oyster FAQs

Tinned oysters are cooked and shelf-stable, so they don't carry the risks associated with raw oysters, and their low mercury content means they aren't subject to the seafood limits that apply to larger fish. Raw oysters should be avoided during pregnancy. As always, check with your doctor or midwife about your own circumstances.

Probably not in the way the legend suggests. The claim usually rests on their zinc content and zinc's role in hormone production - but that link matters most in people who are actually zinc deficient, and the evidence for any effect beyond that is thin. They remain an excellent source of zinc regardless of what else you were hoping for.

Yes. Once opened, transfer any unused oysters and their oil to an airtight container, refrigerate, and eat within two to three days. Don't store them in the opened tin. Unopened, they're shelf-stable and need no refrigeration.

Oysters are among the most sustainable animal proteins available. Farmed oysters need no feed, no fresh water and no fertiliser - they live on what's already in the seawater. They also filter that water as they grow, which can improve the quality of the surrounding environment. Very little else you eat can claim that.

Yes, provided there's no shellfish allergy – tinned oysters are fully cooked. They're a strong source of zinc and B12 for growing bodies. Check the sodium on the nutrition panel and start small, as the smoky, briny flavour is a bigger one than most children are used to.

Food first, generally. Oysters deliver zinc alongside B12, selenium, copper, iron, protein and omega-3 – a combination no single supplement replicates. Supplements also make it far easier to exceed the 40mg/day upper limit for zinc, which is difficult to do through food.

Shellfish is one of the common allergy-causing foods Australian guidelines recommend introducing before 12 months, and oysters are a shellfish.

Current ASCIA guidance is to introduce the common allergens - cow's milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, wheat, soy, sesame, fish and shellfish - within a baby's first year, once they're showing signs of readiness for solids at around six months. Once a food is tolerated, keep offering it at least once a week. Babies with eczema or an existing food allergy should still have allergens introduced early rather than avoided.

On the practical side, tinned oysters are soft enough to mash with a fork, which makes them easier to serve at an early-solids texture than a fresh oyster. They're naturally high in sodium - from the seawater, not from anything added - so a small amount is the sensible starting point, as it is with any first allergen taste. The smoky flavour is a big one, so don't be surprised if it takes a few attempts.
